Snapchat is a social messaging app designed for sending photos and videos. For older Millennials and Generation X, who came of age with America Online (AOL), it’s like AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) on steroids. And for younger Millennials and Gen Z, usage of the app is very intuitive: a combination of text-based chatting and image sharing. It’s like the intersection of text messaging and Instagram.

On Snapchat, your posts are organized into stories that are scrolled through automatically, and ads are inserted between the individual posts in a story. Currently, there are 79.7 million users in the U.S.

By and large, Snapchat users skew much younger than Facebook or Instagram — 53% of users are 15-25 years old, and 34% are 26-35.

One of the nice things about the platform is you have options to use both static imagery with a message, or a traditional video commercial with image, graphics, music and voiceover. And they can be interactive as well.
