Memorable TV In Show Voiceover Narration

African male voice over artist recording a voice-over script with a condenser and Pioneer exclusive headphones.Narrators can really make or break the memorability of a show and keep an audience coming back for more. Some generations might remember the popular 1980s TV series The Wonder Years. The adult version of the main character, Kevin Arnold, narrates the events of his adolescence adding a reflective and nostalgic dimension to the show. On the other hand, narration by TV host Robin Leach of the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous felt like he was talking at viewers in a boisterous tone that amped up the over-the-top glitz and glamor of the era. On the Fox comedy Arrested Development, director and actor, Ron Howard, was an actual character as the in-show narrator of the TV show. Creator Mitch Hurwitz would even have Howard announce upcoming episodes that were completely false and written only for the announcer to read. Today, celebrity lifestyle shows like E! True Hollywood Story have narrators who match the soapy style and gossip-like tone of the subjects. And lifestyle shows like Love It Or List It or House Hunters on HGTV both have female narrators that really move the action forward and keep the viewers on top of key details, including financials.

In some unique circumstances, the voice over narration in a TV show is a big reason people tune into a program every week. Reality TV show Love Island uses voiceover as a running commentary on the contestants’ outrageous behavior. Bringing ostentatious flair and hilarity, the narrator’s off-the-cuff remarks make the viewer feel like they’re experiencing and reacting to the drama along with him.

From hot single party goers looking for love to the splendor of wildlife in nature, the documentary series Planet Earth pulls the viewers into the wonder of the natural world. Part of the enjoyment of watching the series is also listening to David Attenborough’s voice as he guides viewers through stunning visuals of wildlife and landscapes. His narration serves to educate and engage audiences by giving scientific information while reassuring us. Attenborough’s narration deepens our understanding but also conveys the urgency to save the Earth’s fragile ecosystems. Viewers are so accustomed to his voice that it’s become an essential element when watching the series.
