LGBTQIA+

The acronym LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual, with the plus symbol recognizing non-cisgender and non-straight identities. As this article by Out Right International notes, the terms and definitions for the LGBTQIA+ community continue to change and evolve. They may also mean different things to different people, so the best approach to using these terms, especially with individuals, is simply to ask. What would they prefer you to use?

Representation of LGBTQIA+ communities in the media has historically been negative and harmful, and there have been attacks on the community that have been downright dangerous. 2021 was recently dubbed the worst year for LGBTQ state legislative attacks, and early 2022 has already seen Republican lawmakers introduce measures to target trans and nonbinary youths.

In the midst of challenges, the calls for inclusion and action are driving steps forward for positive and authentic LGBTQIA+ representation. In February 2022, Apple announced a non-binary voice option for Siri and confirmed it had been voiced by a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Netflix film Mitchell vs. the Machines featured a leading queer character, Katie Mitchell, voiced by Abbi Jacobson. There continues to be a call for more representation and authenticity.
