Meet Zippy: Professional African American Voice Over Actor

September 19, 2025 by Blue Wave Voiceover

Looking for a Professional African American Voice Actor? Meet Zippy Kaufman!

As a kid who grew up on Venice Beach you’d think he loved the California sand and sun – but Zippy Kaufman preferred being indoors watching pro wrestling on TV! And yet, he didn’t leave that easy-going and casual west coast vibe behind. It’s part of his personality and clients love working with him because he brings it to his voiceover work.

Zippy Kaufman, Professional African American Voice Talent
Zippy Kaufman

Zippy’s childhood love of WWE brought him to their writing offices as an adult but, in a plot twist he didn’t anticipate, he was quickly laid off. So, he seized the opportunity to start investing in another interest–voiceover. As he likes to say, “Losing my dream job led to my dream career.” His training in improv at Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica and theater at CalArts set him up with the acting skills he needed to eventually become the voice of major brands like Honda, Google, and BET, plus many Democratic candidates. Of course, his friendly, conversational, and “professional-but-not-stuffy-because-no-one-likes-that” tone make him an easy casting choice for a variety of genres.

When he’s not behind the mic, you can catch this movie lover debating the greatest film ever made (it’s The Last Dragon) or in the kitchen wishing he could recreate the dinosaur rib at Terry Black’s BBQ in Texas.

If you’re looking to hire a Professional African American Voice Actor with a conversational style for your commercial, a business casual vibe for your corporate narration, and that conveys intelligence for your progressive campaign, hire Zippy Kaufman!

Tell us a Little About Your Broadcast-Quality Home Studio. Where is it? What Kind of Equipment Do you Have? What Do you Like About it?

After years of blankets and pillow forts, I was finally able to invest in a custom-built Studiobricks VO booth a few years ago, and it’s been worth every penny! It’s not completely soundproof, but my complete loathing of all things leaf blower has definitely mellowed out since Studiobricks came around. Mic-wise, I use a Townsend Sphere L22. I also have a Sennheiser 416, but that one’s the star of my travel rig these days.

What’s Something that Most People Don’t Know About You?

The origin of the nickname ‘Zippy!’ I’ve been wearing it since I performed a monologue in a talent show in 2nd grade where it was the name of a character I was playing. The nickname stuck, and I’ve been ‘Zippy’ ever since.

How Did You Get Into Voiceover Work?

Once upon a time, I moved from L.A. to Stamford, Connecticut to work my dream job as a writer for WWE. A mere three months into the job, I found myself laid off from my dream job with two weeks of severance pay. I took that money and invested it into something I had always been interested in (but kept coming up with excuses to avoid): voiceover. As I like to tell people, losing my dream *job* led to my dream *career*!

Do you remember the first voiceover job you ever did?

Honestly, it was probably those intercom announcements I’d make giving out Lakers playoff scores to patients when I was Clinic Manager at a student acupuncture clinic for eight years.

What Can You Offer to a New Client Who’s Working With You for The First Time?

I’m a firm believer in rolling with the punches. There are a lot of moving parts that go into a project, and something that a new client (or any client, for that matter) will get with me is a sense of, “everything else may be completely chaotic, but at least Zippy is cool, calm, collected, and smells great (just trust me on that last one).”

What Has Been Your Favorite Voiceover Project – Political or Otherwise – to Date?

With the attacks over the last year on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, I’m really proud to have leant my voice to a few DEI eLearning projects pretty recently.

What is Your Biggest Voiceover Pet Peeve?

There HAS to be a silent leaf blower model out there that everyone can just agree to start using…

If you Could Tell Political Voiceover Clients One Thing That Would Help You Do Your Job Better, or Help Them Get What They Want Faster – What Would that One Thing Be?

If you’re wondering whether or not I can pronounce that word or name, assume that I can’t and give it to me phonetically!

Also, chocolate chip cookies (no nuts!) help me, umm…do my job better or something…

What Advice do You Have for Talents Who Want to do Political Voiceover?

It’s cliché still rings true: Don’t be afraid to be uniquely yourself. Especially in politics, there’s no reason not to bring all of your personality into your reads.

What Hobbies Do You Have Outside of Your Voiceover Work?

Catch me outside on the grill or the smoker, but don’t ask me for a plate. I *love* cooking, but I’m also very critical of my kitchen skills- nothing is ever good enough to share if you ask me!

Any Final Thoughts?

Angela Bassett was absolutely robbed of the 1994 Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Tina Turner in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It.’ Argue with your momma!

Why Elizabeth Saydah Is the Professional Voice Talent You’ve Been Searching For

April 28, 2025 by Blue Wave Voiceover

If you’re looking for an authoritative, mature, and confident professional female voice over talent, Elizabeth Saydah is your next hire! She wants to share her love of storytelling with you and deliver a performance that makes your project great. She’ll make it easy for you and give you the reassurance that only her professionalism can provide. And don’t let her warm or authoritative voice fool you – if you need a sassy soccer mom or a college dude recovering from spring break, she can deliver.

Elizabeth’s (or Liz’s) roster of clients have included Disney, Google, Hyundai, and Netflix. With over a decade of experience, Liz has voiced a wide variety of genres like VOG (Voice of God), commercials, and In Show narration. These are only some of the genres where her talent shines in addition to democratic political campaigns. When she’s not working you may catch her doing some fun improv or chatting about Bruce Springsteen’s brilliance.

Meet Elizabeth Saydah who is your next trustworthy strong professional female voice actor for your project!

  1. Tell us a little about your broadcast-quality home studio.

I’ve been working out of the same double-walled 4 x 4 booth for the last eight years from my home, which very recently changed from Los Angeles California to the Hudson Valley in New York. Big home change, but the booth has ensured consistency throughout. I think that’s really what I love most about it. I also don’t have to stress about external noise because it’s a literal tank and about as soundproof as you can get. I will say I’m working on building an “in-room” studio in my home now that we have more space, but it’s been a cozy, reliable work home for me from day one.

I use the Neumann TLM 103 mic and Apollo Twin interface at home, and Sennheiser 416 and Arrow when I travel. I love the quality and sound of both mics in their respective environments, and the UAD interfaces are just so convenient and all-encompassing in what they can do.

  1. What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I’ve trained and performed in improv comedy for almost 20 years, and it continues to this day. Nothing else I’ve ever done has been as joyful, challenging, and beneficial to me as a voice actor, actor and human! Laughter is the most critical contribution to my mental health.

  1. How did you get into voiceover work?

Elizabeth Saydah in her booth Recording and LaughingWhen I was a waitress in Chicago at the worst restaurant ever, a very kind woman said, “you have a great voice, you should check out this coach I use.” So I did and… probably learned some things? After that I did my first ADR job (for zero dollars) that I think I found on Craigslist. Once I moved to LA, I did a play with a girl who said, “You should check out so-and-so who did my VO demo.” So – I did, and almost immediately got an agent and jumped on all the casting sites (that were just starting to ramp up in popularity). And the rest is history!

  1. Do you remember the first voiceover job you ever did?

As far as a professional job that I actually was paid for, it was either a case study for an MTV/Subway cross promotion OR – more interesting – a toy called “Potty Mouth” that you affixed to your toilet and would yell at anyone who didn’t close the lid. Brilliant.

  1. What can you offer to a new client who’s thinking of working with you for the first time?

Well, 100%, first and foremost, whether it’s local or global, I’m all in. My most loyal clients have usually begun on very small projects and are responsible for most of my income to be honest.

Practically speaking, my work is both fast and high quality. I always have extremely fast turnarounds and flexible availability for directed sessions. It’s very beneficial for political clients who need things in 15 minutes.

I’m also just easy to work with. I always bring a sense of humor, accessibility and professionalism to everything. Clients have enough on their plates, so whatever I can do to make their lives that much easier, I do. Customer service is everything; they need to trust that they’re going to get what they need back when they need it.

  1. What has been your favorite voiceover project – political or otherwise – to date?
Blue Wave Voiceover elizabeth_saydah
Elizabeth Saydah, Voiceover Artist

My favorite project has been playing the lead role in the game Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals. Creatively it was a blast, and I had (have) a great rapport with the developer, Night School Studio. The project spanned almost two years and I got a New York Game Award nomination out of it which felt pretty good. But as far as work I put out into the world, it was also a point of pride for me because it deals with the emotional rollercoaster of being in your 30s and “who am I in the world”. So it was both meaningful and perfectly suited for me for where I am in my life.

  1. What is your biggest voiceover pet peeve?

Probably the *general* assumption that VO is like this get-rich-quick career move, and the countless people to date who have asked me “how to get into VO.” I know it often comes from a good place, but there seems to be a general lack of appreciation for the amount of time it takes to get something going and then KEEP it going. Believe it or not, it’s a full-time job!

  1. If you could tell political voiceover clients one thing that would help you do your job better, or help them get what they want faster – what would that one thing be?

Ask 20 people what “conversational” means, and you get 20 different answers. I always love a reference spot. If there’s an existing piece of work that is similar in tone to what the client is looking for, that’s immensely helpful. I’ve had clients give me a list of adjectives as direction, but when they came back and redirected with a specific reference audio, it was like, ohh they really meant x y and z instead. Sometimes traditional direction doesn’t match up with our “VO speak.” So don’t feel shy about providing reference material as inspo!

  1. What advice do you have for talents who want to do political voiceover?

Make sure you have a broadcast quality studio, lightning fast turnarounds, and a point of view. I feel like especially in this political climate, it’s very helpful to know what you care about and believe in, and I think clients – especially those who source talent from a place like Blue Wave – pay attention to that.

Be aware of the different styles of political voice over and the tones they employ. Is it aggressive for an attack ad? Is it empathetic for a candidate’s cause? Being able to quickly identify what the spot calls for helps you do your job more efficiently and effectively (and might snag you a loyal client).

  1. What hobbies do you have outside of your voiceover work?

Yoga, hiking, tennis, improv comedy, reading, supporting/seeing live theater, gardening, traveling, antiquing, obsessing over my cat.

AI vs. Human Voiceover

April 19, 2023 by Maria Pendolino

The use of AI isn’t new for any of us. Artificial Intelligence, or “AI” is used in voice recognition systems like Siri and Alexa and powers recommendation engines for Netflix, YouTube, and TikTok to suggest content we might like. Latest news about ChatGPT showcases how AI technology is being used to generate everything from to-do lists, travel itineraries, code and emails to messages on dating apps. On the other side, there’s AI Suit Up: an AI-powered photography that promise high quality professional headshots without needing to physically step foot in a photography studio. Therefore, it’s no surprise that AI has been used to generate text to speech voiceovers with the promise of human-like emotion. Let’s chat about AI vs. Human Voiceover.

AI voiceover generators promise quick, scalable options that can deliver the nuances of a human voice. But, many of these AI voiceover engines may not capture the depth and emotion to meaningfully connect with audiences. And with the barrage of messages folks receive today, the general public is getting VERY good at recognizing when a voice is not authentic. Just think about how you behave when you scream “REPRESENTATIVE” at your financial institution’s helpful phone system!

AI Voiceover Generators vs. Authentic Human Voiceover Actors

Working with a professional voiceover actor means working with someone who is dedicated to their craft and will work with you to deliver just the right tone and emotion to convey your message. This allows your message to resonate with audiences you’re looking to reach. You won’t need to listen for the emotion or wonder if the file sounds “human enough” especially when speaking about sensitive topics or messages that require a high level of care and nuance. The talent at Blue Wave Voiceover genuinely wants to get the right take and right delivery to help support your cause. We do this work because we want to voice content to elevate campaigns, organizations, and candidates that we actually care about!

You’ll have someone you can provide direction and feedback to so that you achieve exactly what you need in your audio–something that AI can’t offer due to its unpredictability and inconsistency.

Why Should You Use Professional Voiceover Actors Over AI Voiceover Generators?

When working with AI voice over software, it’s hard to answer the question of who you’re working with, but you’ll know exactly who you’re working with when you hire one of the talents who are a part of Blue Wave Voiceover. If you’re looking for a particular voice to reach a particular audience, you’re sure to find that voice represented at among our roster. Our collective of voiceover actors mirror the diversity of America today so that the audiences you’re trying to reach hear themselves authentically reflected in your message.

Blue Wave Voiceover offers a variety of genuine authentic voices that are real and reflect diversity in ethnicity, gender, and age. We know that the modern media buyer would need diversity in ages (Millennials, Gen X-ers, Baby Boomers/Seniors), multicultural voices (including Asian-American and Pacific Islander, African American, and Hispanic bilingual voices), and gender (including male, female, transgender and gender nonconforming).

Cheap Software Can Ruin A Spot

If you’re spending a chunk of change on your media buy, as well as the firm you hired to execute your digital strategy – don’t opt for cheap artificial voice software instead of an authentic human performer, just to save a few bucks. Our voiceover actors offer fair and flexible budgets – we understand that a spot that is only running in Montana won’t command the same rate as a spot running in the New York tri-state region. We work hard to make sure all of our clients and customers across the world can afford to utilize authentic, diverse, professional voiceover artists for their creative. You might think you’re saving a quick buck by utilizing an AI voice generating engine. AI is great at a lot of things when it comes to saving time or aggregating data – but it can’t truly bring the emotion of America to life with all of the inflection, nuance, and importance that your content deserves.

So, why waste the money on a software engine you probably can’t take to air? Chances are? You’ll listen to the final product and realize there IS value in human creativity and you’ll want to hire a professional actor to bring your copy to life in a way a piece of software never can.

Work With A Trained Professional Voiceover Performer

When you work with a dedicated and trained voiceover actor, such as the professionals from Blue Wave Voiceover, you’re working with someone–an actual person–who is dedicated to serving and supporting your cause and mission. The full-time political voiceover actors on our roster are committed to supporting mission-driven groups, non-profit organizations, and Democratic and progressive candidates for office because they believe in ushering a Blue Wave each election season.

Top Five Ways to Find Voiceovers For Political Spots

November 15, 2021 by Maria Pendolino

Looking for just the right voiceover for your political spots? It’s easier now, more than ever, to find voiceovers who can speak to the audience you’re looking to reach and hit the tone you’re looking to achieve. Working directly with a professional voiceover artist ensures you are working with someone dedicated to their craft and committed to delivering the highest quality audio performance so that your political spot stands out.

Home Recording Booths and Voiceover Microphones

A silver microphone with a black pop filterThanks to technology, you have access to professional voiceover artists all across the country who can deliver broadcast studio-quality voiceovers from their at-home recording studios, using sound isolation booths like StudioBricks and Whisper Rooms. Working with a professional with an at-home studio means you don’t need to factor in a commute time, coordinate studio schedules, or pay for renting studio space.

With high-quality recording studios come high-quality recording equipment. Professional voiceover actors record their voiceovers using high-quality microphones and recording equipment including the Neumann U87 and Sennheiser MK-416, Neumann TLM-103,  Audio-Technica AT4040, Warm Audio WA87, or Rode NT-1 to make sure the files you receive meet (and exceed!) your highest standards.

Connect With A Talent Live to Direct Your Session

If you’re looking to direct a live session, not a problem! Many voiceover artists are familiar and comfortable with navigating platforms such as davis-sanchezSourceConnect, ISDN, ipDTL, Phone Patch, Skype, Google Hangouts, and Zoom to ensure you can provide feedback and direction in real-time.

Not only do professional voiceover artists have their own studios, but they’re also ready to provide editing and post-production services to make sure the files you receive are ready to plug and play.

So where do you find reliable and professional voiceover artists to help you with your political spots? This task can feel overwhelming and time-consuming, but finding just the right talent doesn’t have to be! We’ve got the Top 5 Ways To Find and Hire a Political Voice Over Artist for your spots today!

Top Five Ways to Find and Hire Voiceover Artists for Political Spots

#1 – Visit a marketing collective like Blue Wave Voiceover

The Blue Wave Voiceover logo, a wave and text. Connecting with a marketing collective like Blue Wave Voiceover connects you to an entire roster of freelance voiceover actors who look and sound like America today. The professional voiceover artists at Blue Wave Voiceover are committed to working with mission-driven organizations, advocacy groups, Democrat and progressive candidates, and campaigns across the country to deliver fast and flexible service. The Blue Wave Voiceover roster includes female, male and non-binary voices. You can also search voices to find performers who use a specific regional accent or dialect, voiceover talents that can deliver an authentic urban sound and even voiceovers that are bilingual and fluent in Spanish. A collective like Blue Wave Voiceover gives you options without overwhelming you with too many choices. Blue Wave Voiceover is also happy to provide free auditions of your script so that you can hear voice actors speaking your words. Email casting@bluewavevoiceover.com to audition your script today. There’s no obligation to hear auditions of your script.

#2 – Use Google to search for a specific type of talent

If you know what you are specifically looking for in your voiceover, Google can be helpful in finding it, especially if you are looking for a political voiceover talent who aligns with a specific value or belief. Pair your voiceover search with keywords for a specific regional accent, language, heritage, social cause, or issue to hone in on the specific type of voiceover you’re looking to incorporate in your ad.

An agent sitting at a desk having a video chat#3 – Work with a licensed talent agency

Licensed talent agencies have networks of political commercial voice actors who are talented and experienced men, women, and children ready to bring your political ad to life and connect with the audiences you want to reach. With a vetted talent roster, you can choose from SAG-AFTRA and non-union talents who can deliver a wide variety of voices.

#4 – Ask for referrals from colleagues who produce political media

The classic phone-a-friend strategy goes into play here! Reach out to your networks and ask if they know of anyone or have worked with voiceover artists with experience voicing political commercials. They might know someone, or they might know someone who might know someone who could be the perfect fit for your next project or campaign! Word-of-mouth referrals are often a great way to ensure you connect with a professional who can turn around your project on time and deliver a high-quality file.

#5 – Post a casting notice on a freelancer site

Sites like Voice123, Bodalgo, and Actors Access can help you connect with a voice actor looking for their next opportunity. If you go this route, keep in mind that you may receive auditions and proposals from amateur voice actors who do not have professional at-home setups or a treated space to do the recording and deliver high-quality audio.

Working with a professional voiceover artist will ensure your political spot connects and resonates with the audiences you’re looking to reach. Bringing in a professional to deliver your compelling message with just the right tone, pitch, and professionalism will give your media the best chance at making a difference for your candidate and campaign!

Happy LGBTQIA+ Pride Month from Blue Wave Voiceover!

June 16, 2021 by Maria Pendolino

Happy-LGBTQIAThe Blue Wave Voiceover collective is thrilled to raise our voices in celebration of and solidarity with LGBTQIA+ pride voice actors and people across the globe! This June – and all year-round! – we are joyfully celebrating and amplifying queer and trans communities and we are also continuing to fight every day for the liberation of all LGBTQIA+ people. We’ve seen real movement in 2021 towards more inclusive representation in VO and less cisheteronormative casting. But we recognize that there is still much work to be done to break down the queerphobic and transphobic barriers in voiceover and the performing arts. And we would be remiss not to acknowledge that 2021 has been one of the most dangerous years in terms of anti-trans legislation, attacks against the rights of trans youth, and fatal violence against trans and gender non-conforming people, particularly BIPOC trans women and femmes.

Black-Trans-Lives-MatterAs a collective of voiceover artists who look and sound like America today, we Blue Wavers are extremely passionate about creating safer, more inclusive spaces for voice actors and people who identify anywhere along the beautifully diverse spectrums of gender, sexuality, and expression. We know this solidarity looks like advocating for LGBTQIA+ liberation in the present and also, remembering and uplifting the queer and trans activists of the past who paved the way.

This June not only marks another year of celebrating LGBTQIA+ people around the world and pressing for queer liberation, but it is also the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn – a queer bar that still proudly stands today in the West Village – and the queer and trans patrons fought back, igniting protests that lasted for days and launching the Gay Liberation Movement. On the frontlines were primarily trans women of color, drag queens, and butch lesbians including Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major, and Stormé DeLarverie. Half a century later, we owe these courageous advocates everything for the progress we have seen and the victories we have won. Of course, there is still a long ways to go so as we continue to fight for justice for people of all sexualities, gender identities, and expressions, we remember Marsha P. Johnson’s words, “No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us!”

In celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride 2021, we pass the mic to our amazingly talented artists!

And if you want to check out our LGBTQIA+ voice talents, search artist bios here.

CherieCherie B. Tay (she/they)
“I am so proud to be out and queer. To me, the word “queer” represents joy, fearlessness, and the pride in being comfortable with who you are.
This past year, I got to voice an animated short as a non-binary platypus! It was so well done, and I was honored to tell their story. I also voiced eLearning projects about LGBTQ+ inclusion in classrooms!
I wanted people to learn that who they love is not a thing to be shameful about. May we all find acceptance, kindness, and love!”

Allegra Verlezza (they/them)Blue Wave Voiceover Happy LGBTQIA+ Pride Month from Blue Wave Voiceover!

“Being queer, genderfluid, and non-binary fills me up with so much joy and pride! As a gender studies student, I learned – in the very classrooms in which Audre Lorde taught decades before – that to “queer” something as verb means to trouble and deconstruct something, to destabilize and dismantle the power dynamics of something. And boy do I love queering voiceover and acting!
Recently, I voiced a project for a virtual Pride event where a bunch of LGBTQ+ voice actors voiced the same script of proposing to their partner and the video included all of our voices. I absolutely loved this symbolism that a “queer voice” doesn’t sound like just one voice – it’s a huge, diverse cacophony of voices!
I care very deeply about creating space in the voiceover industry – and everywhere – for LGBTQ+ talents, particularly those most marginalized in our community like BIPOC and TGNC actors, to be their fullest and freest selves. I believe queer and trans voice actors amplifying our authentic voices is a revolutionary act and I know there’s a future where we never have to compromise any part of ourselves to do what we love. Inside and outside of the booth, I fight to break down reductive binaries and harmful stereotypes because living beyond the made-up binary benefits us all!”
