Tell us a little about your broadcast-quality home studio. Where is it? What kind of equipment do you have? What do you like about it?

My broadcast-quality home studio is surrounded by Producer’s Choice Blankets, sound absorption foam, and bass traps. I use a Rode NTG-2 microphone, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, Audacity/TwistedWave DAW, and a Mac Mini. I like that I am able to have my computer outside my recording space for me to pop out and do some editing and other work from there.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I have developed a crazy intolerance to processed sugar. I can’t even have a drop of simple syrup. My limit seems to be no more than 9 grams of added sugar if the items are packaged. I have learned to love using dates, honey, monk fruit, and bananas as a substitute in my food.

How did you get into voiceover work?

When I was in my undergrad, I worked at a sporting goods store and did the announcements. I had a manager comment that my voice sounds like it could be on an adult contemporary radio… Then a few years later, I was working for an investment firm wearing many hats. I enjoyed doing telephony (phone prompts) for the company’s phone system… Those and a few other series of events stuck with me until I took classes on the side for fun. That’s where I discovered voiceover. I did a few jobs, but then found out that I was not allowed to have another job on the side so I put it on the backburner until I left the investment world. As soon as I was able to, I got coaching done and made new demos to replace my old ones.

Do you remember the first voiceover job you ever did?

I voiced a few explainer videos for a voice altering app.

What can you offer to a new client who’s thinking of working with you for the first time?

A new client will experience collaborative work with me and a fast turnaround (less than 24 hours, depending on the size of work). I would be happy to share the project we worked on together on social media if the project is public, and not NDA or internal work. (I have been doing social media marketing on the side for several years.) I would also share tips for their social media.

What has been your favorite voiceover project – political or otherwise – to date?

My favorite project to date is a dubbing job that has been under NDA (shhh 🤫).

What is your biggest voiceover pet peeve?

Most people think that you just read a script and that it’s not a real job. Having a nice voice does not book voiceover work, and the work does just fall on your lap. It requires a lot of coaching and education. You need to learn how to use your audio equipment on your end. You are running a business and you need to know how to market yourself.

If you could tell voiceover clients one thing that would help you do your job better, or help them get what they want faster – what would that one thing be?

Share with me who the target market is and what sort of emotion they would like the read to be. The more information and direction they share, it leaves less room for revisions.

What advice do you have for talents who want to do political voiceover?

Work with a coach who does political voiceover work, whether it be someone who books political work voicing it or producing the work. They will know the industry trends and what books the work… And be yourself.

What hobbies do you have outside of your voiceover work?

Making handmade cards… Walking with my husband along the coast and watching the sunset… Traveling… Cooking… Attending foodie events. I take so many photos of food. I see plated food as artwork.

Thinking about hiring a Spanish speaking voice over talent?

March 3, 2025 by Blue Wave Voiceover

Do you want to hire a Spanish Speaking Voice Over Talent?

Antonio Fornaris
Antonio Fornaris

Are you thinking about hiring a professional Spanish voiceover talent for your next campaign? Over the course of five hundred years, the population of Spanish speakers in the United States has steadily grown.

Speaking Spanish has become a professional asset not just in industries like business but voiceover too! There are almost 500 million Spanish speakers in the world which makes it the second most spoken language in the world (after Mandarin Chinese).

Like English, the Spanish speaking world covers a wide range of regional accents and dialects. The bilingual voiceover talent you hire might depend on where your audience lives and which Latino community they identify with. Are they Puerto Ricans or Colombians in New York City, Mexicans in Los Angeles, or Cubans in Miami? All these different groups speak Spanish a little differently meaning their accents and vernacular can be as distinct from the other as English speakers from New York City, London England, or Sydney Australia. You want to hire a Spanish-speaking voiceover talent who relates to your audience in a voice they recognize. Blue Wave Voiceover’s bilingual Spanish-speaking talent are as varied as Latin culture itself. Some of our talent can also accommodate a standard or neutral Spanish if requested.

Español Grows in the United States

As our neighbor, Mexico has the largest number of Spanish speakers in the world with nearly 130 million. Between immigration and trade, Spanish keeps growing in the United States. We have the 4th largest population of native Spanish speakers according to a report from Instituto Cervantes. The Wilson Center assessed that “the US has 40 times the number of Spanish speakers of any other country where Spanish is not an official language”. Instituto Cervantes’ report also estimates that by 2060, the US will have a population of 26.5% of hispanic origin. But it won’t stop there…they predict the US will then become the world’s second largest Spanish speaking country!

¿Hablas Spanglish?

Blue Wave Voiceover Carolina_Hoyos
Carolina Hoyos

With all of this growth, inevitably English and Spanish would converge and become the norm in many communities around the country. Spanglish is a fun mix of Spanish and English used interchangeably when speaking. Its wide-spread use has achieved dictionary status in both the Royal Academy of Spanish and the Oxford English Dictionary, híjole! According to Pew Research Center, bilingual Latinos use Spanglish more often than their English. Spanglish is used more with second generation Latinos than third or higher generations.

Latino Purchasing Power

As the fastest growing population in the US, Latinos have economic power. Only in the past few years has their purchasing power been truly understood and harnessed by US industries. According to a 2023 report by L’ATTITUDE, an annual business event that focuses on Latino leadership across industries, Latino purchasing power was measured at $3.4 trillion.

In 2023, the US Latino population spent $2 billion according to a report by Instituto Cervantes. The same report states that Spanish is the second most used language on digital platforms like Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and Netflix.

Identifying as Latino in the United States

According to the Pew Center, the majority of Spanish speakers think it’s important that future Latino generations speak Spanish while those who are more English dominant think it’s less important. How well they speak changes across generations – 75% of US born Latinos saying they speak very well down to 14% by the third or fourth generation. Whether or not one speaks Spanish and if it makes one more Latino or not is a debated topic within the community.

As languages mix, more and more Latinos identify as multiracial. In 2022, nearly 25 million identified as such up from 3 million in 2010. Some of this, according to the Pew Research Center, can be attributed to the changes in race descriptions for the US census in addition to increased racial diversity.

Do you need a Bilingual Voice Over Talent?

March 3, 2025 by Blue Wave Voiceover

Brian Amador

According to the World Economic Forum, about 70 million people speak a language other than English at home in the United States. Spanish is the second most spoken language and then Cantonese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Arabic are the most common non-English languages in the country.

There are a few key benefits to hiring a bilingual voice talent for your political ad or commercial. It’s a strategic investment that helps an audience connect authentically with a speaker. No matter what genre you may be producing whether it’s corporate videos, political ad campaigns, e-learning, radio imaging, or explainer videos, a bilingual voice talent broadens your message’s reach and makes it more inclusive. If you have a corporate or e-learning video that needs a bilingual voice over narrator, hiring a professional voice over talent from a collective like Blue Wave Voiceover can be the most efficient and authentic way to connect with listeners.

There are numerous advantages when hiring a bilingual voice-over talent. Here are five key benefits:

Bilingual Voice Over Talent Broadens Audience Reach

Blue Wave Voiceover AndreSantana-Headshot
André Santana

A bilingual talent can seamlessly switch between languages, making your content accessible to a wider demographic. When a listener hears a message in their native language, it becomes more relatable and powerful. A voice over talent’s ability to speak a second language opens more opportunities for strategic audience targeting.

For political campaigns, this inclusivity can appeal to diverse voter bases who, for example, speak Spanish or Arabic. For commercials, corporate videos, or e-learning, it can connect with both native and non-native speakers of a second language. If an international company needs a corporate training video for employees in another language, hiring a voice over talent to narrate can make a new employee feel welcomed and included.

Bilingual Voice Over Talent Brings Cultural Relevance and Authenticity

Native bilingual voice over talents understand cultural nuances in both languages. This ensures that a message resonates authentically with each audience. Bringing in a native speaker avoids mistranslations or cultural faux pas that might alienate potential voters, customers, or learners. Authentic representation truly matters today.

Bilingual Voice Over Talent Can Save Money and Time

Hiring a single bilingual voice over actor can eliminate the need for multiple talents thus reducing production costs. It also speeds up the recording process, as the same talent can handle multiple language versions in one session. Corporate video can also save companies time and money without needing to hire an in-person translator. Blue Wave Voiceover’s professional talent have broadcast-quality home studios and can often turn around a project in 24-48 hours depending on the scope.

Bilingual Voice Over Talent Enhances Credibility and Engagement

Carolina Hoyos

Hearing a message in one’s native language builds trust and emotional connection. In political campaigns it can encourage participation in democratic processes that may not have been possible if spoken only in English. In commercials, a brand can be more accessible and relatable for a consumer if it’s in another language. A brand’s reach expands into more communities when people feel heard and need a solution to a problem.

For e-learning, bilingual narration improves comprehension and engagement for learners who might be more comfortable switching between languages. In a genre like animation or dubbing, authentic foreign language voice actors enhance the storytelling and improve the viewing experience for an audience.

Flexibility in Messaging and Marketing

A bilingual voiceover talent can adapt the tone, style, and delivery to match the expectations of different linguistic and cultural audiences. Being flexible is invaluable in creating targeted and effective political ads or commercials. E-learning videos can perform well across different markets too.

Some of the most widely spoken languages in the U.S. can benefit from targeted messaging. For example, there are about 3.5 million Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. Tagalog has over 1.5 million speakers while Arabic has over 1.2 million with the biggest populations in Michigan and Tennessee. And the biggest non-English spoken language, Spanish, keeps growing in the United States. We have the 4th largest population of native Spanish speakers according to a report from Instituto Cervantes. They predict the US will become the world’s second largest Spanish speaking country in a few decades!

Hiring a Bilingual Voice Over Talent

Hiring a bilingual voice talent brings authenticity to your brand’s message. It’s an impactful way for your audience to connect with your message. Blue Wave Voiceover’s roster includes bilingual talent in Mandarin; Thai; and Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish including various regional accents. By hiring a bilingual voice talent, this strategic investment enhances communication, amplifies reach, and fosters genuine connections with diverse audiences.

Mature adults over the age of 65 are living longer and it makes them the fastest growing group in the United States. By 2050, the population will grow by 50%. According to the National Council on Aging, currently about 25% are from racially diverse and ethnic minority communities. This number is expected to grow in the coming decades.

For political campaigns who target this important demographic, they understand that the older people are, the more likely they vote. They consistently turn out at the polls and it makes them a reliable voting group in elections as confirmed by the Pew Foundation. Some of the key issues facing this population continue to be affordable housing and healthcare.

Mature Voices are Savvy Entertainment & Social Media Consumers

Blue Wave Voiceover George-Washington

Who constitutes 43% of the TV watching audience? The 50+ age group! Don’t feel bad about sitting on your couch all day while binging your favorite show. This mature age group watches three times as much TV as the younger generations although it’s mostly cable news.

TV is not the only source of entertainment and information that this group engages with. Youtube, followed by Facebook, are the most popular social media platforms among the 65+ adults. According to the Pew Research Foundation, more women use Facebook while more men use Youtube. Over the years, they have adopted new technologies faster. No longer are just the grandkids owning a tablet or buying a smartphone because their grandparents and older members of their family are doing it too.

Still, technology can be intimidating for older generations which can inhibit them from further exploring its capabilities. According to AARP, despite challenges, they continuously spend more money on tech devices which they use to stay connected with loved ones. When social isolation can really affect aging adults, technology can be a useful tool.

Mature Voices are Wiser and Hipper not just Older

Social media has bridged a gap between older celebrities and younger generations. Celebrities like Dionne Warwick, Betty Davis, and Judy Dench have all wielded its power using humor to connect with younger fans. It’s become so effective that it’s a growing trend as “Grandfluencers”. Retirees and the elderly are using platforms like TikTok to provide advice, reassurance, fashion tips, travel ideas, or just wacky entertainment at their retirement home. With hundreds of thousands to millions of followers, these accounts are changing what people think of as “old”.

Thinking about hiring a Sports Announcer?

November 29, 2024 by Blue Wave Voiceover

For sports fans there’s nothing like the collective rush of electricity when watching your favorite team score. If you want to hire a female, male, or non-binary sports announcer, our voice over talent has the passion for sports and the professionalism you need to engage your audience when your favorite team scores! If you need to hire a voice talent as a sports announcer like a Voice of God (VOG) or for sports promo, we can help.

Sports commentating is essential to experiencing sports events whether live or watching TV from your couch or listening to the radio in your car. Delivering powerful and engaging narratives for audiences helps make the experience of watching or listening to a sports event memorable. A sportscaster must feel the same passion for the game as the fans. For a long time, sportscasters were mostly men and many were in a hall of fame of their own for their memorable deliveries. Al Michaels, Kevin Harlan, John Madden, and Bob Costas each had their signature sports calls during critical moments of historic games. But over the years more women have become notable sports commentators and journalists – folks like Erin Andrews, Michelle Tafoya, Lisa Salters, and more. Diversity and equality in sports still have a long way to go both on the field and behind the microphone, but it’s exciting to see all folks getting ahead in the world of sports!

“The Giants Win the Pennant!…Do You Believe in Miracles?…Gooooooalllll!”

These sports personalities are larger than life, and sometimes characters, like sports commentators, pop up in commercials, industrials, and other non-sports productions. So, when you’re looking for an authentic-sounding sports voiceover for your project – Blue Wave Voiceover can help! (We know Al Michaels miiiiiight be too busy to work on a radio commercial, after all.)

How Voice Talent Skills differ in Radio, Live Events, and TV Sports Commentating

Whether a sports fan experiences an event using radio or TV, a sports commentator must be knowledgeable about the game and passionate for the sport. Each medium requires a different skill set.

For radio, a sports commentator must use their words to paint a visual of the game from moment to moment. The challenge is engaging the audience without using visual cues like TV. Radio has the benefit of providing sound cues and effects to enhance the experience. A radio audience can be fully engaged on a level that is different from television; anticipating and focusing moment to moment and relying on the sports commentator to provide critical updates.

Stadium, Sporting event, SeatsOften a sports announcer is also a Voice of God (VOG) for a live sports event. Matching the action while commenting on the game is a skillset professional voice talent like Joey Schaljo can easily do. She’s the current announcer for the Washington Mystics WNBA team. For her, sitting by the court and watching the action while hyping the audience makes the time fly.

Sports announcing on television requires a balance between when to comment and allow an audience to watch the action. Sometimes there might be two commentators in which case balancing the unnecessary banter so it doesn’t distract from the game is important.

In every medium, clear and concise communication is key. Fans like to hear sportscasters who can offer insight to the game or players. Ultimately part of the fun is the audience and sports commentator sharing spontaneous reactions to unexpected moments in the game.

Maria Pendolino grew up in a sports dominant household in Buffalo, New York. (Don’t ask her about the time the Buffalo Bills lost four Super Bowls in a row…) She’s had the honor of playing the role of a sports commentator in radio commercials, television promos, and even in a spot for the Olympics! “I just love playing the role of a sports commentator or announcer. I really look up to the women who have broken thru in the NFL especially, so it’s been a real honor to play characters based on them in advertising and industrials!” Here’s Maria in a promo for a new FX show where she plays the role of a female sideline reporter:

The Benefits of Hiring a Professional Voice Over Talent as a Sports Commentator in Your Project

Hiring a voiceover talent to play the role of a professional sports commentator can enhance the brand image of any sports event. Your production value elevates when a knowledgeable voice talent can provide game-style commentary and insight while also being a fan of the sport. A captivating sports announcer voiceover talent can draw in audiences and listeners especially if they’re skilled at capturing thrilling moments of a game. And when we’re talking about the real thing: hiring a consistent sports PA Announcer or commentator can also build a loyal fan base especially when they have their own signature sports calls.

Ready to Hire a Professional Voice Over Talent as a Sports Announcer?

Football stadium, Stadium, SoccerMany of Blue Wave Voiceover’s voice talents are skilled at improvisation which is essential preparation for live events. Listening for cues and providing clear communication is part of their professionalism. Performing as a sports commentator requires a voice talent to give a dynamic and powerful delivery that conveys raw energy in the most exciting moments of a game. Our diverse voice over talent roster demonstrates versatility in sports promos, live sports events, or sports commentating. When you’re searching for a voice over talent who can keep their eye on the ball and be the heavyweight in your corner who gives a slam-dunk when it’s down to the wire, Blue Wave Voiceover has your sports voiceover talents!

A Day in the Life of a VOG Announcer

November 29, 2024 by Blue Wave Voiceover

As the stage lights go up and the live show begins, an unseen voice of god voiceover announcer welcomes the audience in a polished and professional tone. They introduce the event host’s name as a video plays on a large screen in the background. The audience claps and right as the host begins, the teleprompter and video cuts out! The announcer reassures the audience of technical difficulties as backstage dissolves into chaos.

VOG, Microphone, Headphones, Voiceover image.A voiceover talent needs to be ready but a Voice of God (VOG) talent needs to be ready for anything! If you’re looking to hire a live announcer or a VOG talent because you’re producing a live event, gala, ceremony, or award show then Blue Wave Voiceover’s roster is ready to deliver their professionalism and experience with live or pre-recorded announcements. We’re happy to offer several voice talents who are English speaking or bilingual English/Spanish speaking talent. If there’s a particular audience you’d like to authentically connect with more, our diverse roster can help.

If you’re wondering what a VOG announcer or presenter is, it’s often an unseen voice at an event who provides live or pre-recorded announcements. You can learn more about this unique genre of the voiceover industry here. It’s how the genre got their name – being the booming “voice of god” that seemingly comes from the heavens. (Or, those speakers mounted to the ceiling, in our case!)

How a Professional Voice of God “VOG” Talent Prepares for a Big Event

It’s the day of a live event. How does a Blue Wave Voiceover VOG talent prepare?

You might see Zippy Kaufman arrive early to give his mouth a work out with some tongue-twisters. Dustin Ebaugh already proofread several times and dutifully rehearsed hard to pronounce names before arriving. Debbie Irwin is armed with lozenges, water, mouth spray, and a full stomach (“I don’t want my belly rumbling!”). Standing by is a talent’s favorite: A cup of hot tea with lemon. (Maria Pendolino swears by Throat Coat tea!)

For pre-recorded announcements, Elizabeth Saydah provides a few variations of names if no pronunciation guide is provided. For her it’s important to have a confident mindset when recording. She takes her time and conveys that the event or person she’s speaking about is the most important. “That helps inform my delivery,” and her colleagues would agree.

Audience, Crowd, Live Event imageAfter rehearsal and the lights go down, it’s showtime! Now is when a voice of god VOG talent has to really be ready for anything. The backstage energy hums with presenters, hosts, and technical crew getting all the elements in place. Always ready, Dustin Ebaugh takes no chances and brings a hardcopy of the script since he rightly points out, “paper doesn’t run out of batteries and die.” And although some bring digital devices for their script, at least those will still be on if teleprompters cut out but a guest still needs a cue. In a case like this, a talent like Debbie Irwin has to apologize to the audience for technical difficulties and ask for patience. “Things can go wrong and you have to be able to pivot on a dime!”

Being backstage is exciting and sometimes VOG talent get the best seat in the house! You can meet the celebrity host or guests. Some of our talents have had the privilege of announcing the President of the United States, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, athletes like Caitlin Clark, or celebrities like Meghan Trainor and James Corden. Debbie Irwin helped Sarah Jessica Parker fix her dress with a safety pin. Despite wardrobe malfunctions or technical difficulties, a Blue Wave Voiceover talent still carefully listens for their cues.

How a VOG Announcer Performs

You might wonder how a VOG announcer delivers their voice for an event than other genres like a commercial? It can depend on the event and the audience. Is it formal? Elizabeth Saydah likes to treat it as special and give her voice a shine or gravity for a room full of important guests. It’s more presentational which is different for a commercial. Dustin Ebaugh agrees that his delivery will be different for racing enthusiasts than for a CPA group. Perhaps if you have a hairstylists convention, you may prefer a younger sounding voice that is more energetic.

Basketball, Sports, AthleteAs the current PA announcer for the Washington Mystics WNBA team, Joey Shaljo explains, “it’s your job to get the audience hyped, so it’s all about enthusiasm and excitement in those instances.” She has a ton of fun which helps if you’re a fan too. “I’m right on the court seeing all the action of play and witnessing the work of some amazing athletes. It’s a job where I have to be ‘on’ and ready to go for 2 hours straight, but the time just flies by.”

Another valuable point for a live VOG is that it’s more interactive. Dustin also says, “sometimes you have to hold for applause or emotional reactions.” Ultimately, as Debbie Irwin reminds us, “It’s bigger. Bolder. Broader!” As a fast talking New Yorker, Maria Pendolino says “I always need to remember to sloooow down so that my voice can resonate in the ballroom, auditorium, or arena!”

Hiring a VOG talent for the first time

Although there’s no “right” answer, Elizabeth Saydah recommends finding a voice that sounds like they’d attend the event themselves. Sometimes you’re not sure what you need until you hear it, in which case our talents are happy to provide an audition of your script. If it’s for a live event, looking for talent that has VOG experience or experience in performing live. Once you book a talent, it’s appreciated to provide a pronunciation guide for people’s names. As Zippy Kaufman says, “A pronunciation guide is a VOG’s best friend.”

Corporate Live EventMaybe you need a male or female live presenter for a corporate event, a black female voiceover for a ceremony, a non-binary or gender non-conforming presenter for your award show? Or perhaps a voice that sounds like Sam Elliott or Amanda Gorman. Our diverse voiceover roster is happy to authentically connect with your audience.

If you’re producing an event and looking to hire a professional voiceover live announcer and voice of god talent, you can listen to our rosters’ demos or ask for an audition. These announcers provide the professionalism, preparation, and skillset to deliver a quality performance!
